A sublimely silly movie undone by its lack of confidence in its smutty convictions. The sell is a journey to the center of the yoni, but wouldn't you just know it winds up being about the sad legacy of childhood sexual abuse? Affluent young married couple Marie and Joseph (Sheryl Lee and Craig Sheffer) take their sexual troubles to a marriage counselor (Spalding Gray), but Marie is also sneaking out to see controversial therapist Baltazar Vincenza (Terence Stamp) for some unorthodox sexual healing. Shocked and dismayed, Joseph undertakes his own sensual journey under Baltazar's guidance, and between portentous lectures about chakras and preservation of the life force there's quite a bit of arty grappling between -- and on top of -- the sheets. First-time director Lance Young, a former studio executive, seems determined not to be accused of making a Zalman King movie, apparently unaware that King has perfected the formula for high-minded smut: Lots of swooningly serious lovemaking in sumptuous locations with just a dash of psychological malaise. Neither Sheffer nor Lee is up to the demands of making anything out of this material, but Stamp is another matter: Strolling around in his skivvies, arching his silver eyebrows while parsing the pathologies of modern women, he is an absolute delight. leave a comment --Maitland McDonagh
