Blink Of An Eye: Review
Fresh out of prison, where he's been serving time for murdering his horribly abusive father, 28-year-old Tommy (Frank John Hughes) moves into a halfway house in East Los Angeles, determined to make a real life for himself. His work-release program places him in the cafeteria kitchen of St. Michael's, a parochial school. He becomes friendly with the younger Guillermo (Lombardo Boyar), a local kid whom Father Chavez (Castulo Guerra) is trying to keep off the streets and away from local gangbangers. Despite his painful social awkwardness, Tommy gradually falls in love with teacher Sophie (Seidy Lopez), whose brother, Steven (Douglas Spain), is a heroin addict. When Steven runs afoul of his dealer, Tommy is forced to choose between staying on the straight and narrow and returning to the violent life he swore he was leaving behind. This low-budget, independent feature marked the directing debut of Van Fischer, who ran a Seattle construction company before several small acting gigs made he want to make his own film. Though hampered by a conventional story, Fischer's first outing is surprising well crafted and shows considerable promise.
