Every time this coup d'etat thriller flags, the screenwriters toss in a new twist; for the most part, however, their surprises are none too surprising. As images of a presidential motorcade buzz in his head, Frank Kavanagh (New Mexico resident Val Kilmer, a patron of the state's Film Investment Program) awakens in a Southwestern border-town. Chased by gunmen through the outskirts of a desert town called Black Point, Frank dove off a high cliff, lost consciousness and woke up with amnesia. Black Point's sheriff, Jack Kolb (Sam Shepard), despite being second-guessed by (male) deputy Shirl Cash (Nobel Willingham), doesn't dismiss Frank's visions about a impending presidential hit. Also listening sympathetically to Frank in the hospital is nurse Liz Culpepper (Amy Smart), who wonders if this stranger could be her ticket out of this one-horse town. As his memory sputters back into focus, Frank realizes his presence in this burg is linked to a scheduled campaign whistle-stop. By the time an associate named Chloe (Neve Campbell) arrives, Frank finds himself increasingly bedeviled by the phrase, "40 hours to Rhombus." He can't figure out his connection to the incumbent president's visit, to his brutal assailants, or to shady lady Mrs. K. (Faye Dunaway), who calls the shots in his fragmented recollections. Furthermore, Nurse Liz seems less concerned about Frank's recovery than with the five-million-dollar fee he's been paid for some undisclosed chore. After leaving the hospital, Frank continues to scuffle with the paid thugs who had beaten him, and informs Sheriff Kolb that he, too, may be involved in a political conspiracy. Then the president arrives in Black Point…. The actors in this grubby flick stitched together from bits of THE PARALLAX VIEW (1974) and MEMENTO (2001) all look stunned, as if they had amnesia about why they'd agreed to appear in this brackishly photographed, direct-to-video feature. leave a comment --Robert Pardi
