Depressing, but somewhat engrossing, British melodrama starring Raitt as a lonely, overweight, but nonetheless attractive office worker dreaming of a possible marriage to a quiet schoolteacher she has been dating. Raitt lives with her retarded sister, whom she cares for. Her dreams are shattered during an uncomfortable dinner date at a Chinese restaurant, followed by a cold kiss and the revelation that her suitor is impotent. The only bright spot left in her life is a young hippie to whom she's rented out her garage. He runs an underground newspaper and entertains the retarded girl by strumming his guitar and singing the songs that he has written. He too moves on, leaving the women to their bleak existence. Good direction and fine performances keep the pace of this lengthy film moving and prevent the material's descent into maudlin sentimentality. leave a comment
