Four brothers (Holden, Tufts, Hayden, and Sands) begin as stuntmen for a traveling air show and wind up carrying mail with veteran da Silva. It's a tough life and da Silva tries to explain it's not a job for a guy who wants a family. Holden doesn't heed that and marries Anne Baxter, who can't take the brothers who come along with the marriage, nor the suspense of not knowing if her husband will return safely. She goes back to him after a while. Sands is killed while flying; Tufts quits flying, then changes his mind; Hayden has an accident and becomes a flight controller. Holden eventually dies and the film ends as they baptize his son. This might have been a terrific depiction of the early days of flying but it gets bogged down in too much soap opera and not enough aerial sequences. BLAZE OF NOON marked Holden's reentry into films after serving in the Army. It was an inauspicious return, but his fans flocked to see him anyhow. Coauthor Sheekman was a most versatile writer, whose other credits were as varied as WONDER MAN; MONKEY BUSINESS; ROMAN SCANDALS; SAIGON; and many others. leave a comment
