Medieval melodrama which is the second live-action feature film directed by famed Polish animator Walerian Borowcyzk. The young and innocent Brancie is married to old nobleman Simon. Simon's son, Trimble, is in love with his young stepmother but keeps it to himself until a king, Wilson, and his wily page, Perrin, arrive. The page and the king have designs on Brancie, but the stepson jealously guards her bedroom door at night, armed with a dagger. The king sneaks to the lady's room disguised in his page's clothing, only to be attacked and wounded in the hand by Trimble. The loyal page cuts his hand to clear the king of any suspicion. Soon after, the king sends Perrin out of the castle to deliver a message. While on his journey, he is confronted by Trimble who forces a duel that ends in a stalemate. Perrin reads the note that he is to deliver and learns that the castle is about to be attacked. Together, the two return to find the elderly Simon in a rage over the sexual intrigue going on under his roof, and the page hides in fear in Brancie's room. Simon discovers him, accuses his innocent wife of infidelity, and drags the page out and begins to have him bricked up in a wall alive. The king frees his page, who gets into another duel with Trimble. This time Trimble loses the contest and is killed. Brancie commits suicide, the page is dragged to his death by a horse, and the whole messy, complicated affair comes to an end. The production values are first rate, the material is given the proper treatment, but unless you enjoy this kind of brutal movie, you'll find it extremely overblown. leave a comment
