Off The Black: Review

Writer-director James Ponsoldt's first feature is a small, modest movie structured around a fairly simple situation that leaves plenty of room for some fine performances. After catching a high-school kid (Trevor Morgan) vandalizing his yard, a depressed, 57-year-old alcoholic (a sublimely grizzled Nick Nolte) strikes a bargain with his young captive: He'll waive the cost of the damages if the kid accompanies him to his 40th high-school reunion and pretends to be his son.
