1955, Movie, NR, 80 mins

A very tough and dark film that foreshadowed things to come. Robinson and Graves are both on Death Row for assorted crimes. Graves has put away $200,000 in loot from a bank robbery, so Robinson takes him and several hostages along on a jail break. They end up trapped on the top floor of a warehouse, and bloodthirsty Robinson wants to kill a hostage every hour or so until the surrounding police leave. The cops won't depart and there's a standoff until Graves kills Robinson, just as the latter is about to murder a priest (Stone). Graves then goes out with guns blazing and the picture is over. This is one of the later gangster films, made almost 20 years after the Warner Brothers' heyday of the genre. It's better than many, but not topflight. By this time, Robinson was already doing a parody of himself as the crime kingpin. Song: "Black Tuesday" (Robert Parrish). leave a comment
