Slickly realized, empty, xenophobic thriller. Nick Conklin (Michael Douglas) is a New York vice detective accused of skimming confiscated drug money in the wake of an expensive divorce. He and his partner, Charlie (Andy Garcia), stumble into a gun battle between rival Japanese yakuza criminal groups and Nick collars one of the Japanese, Sato (Yusaku Matsuda). Assigned to transport Sato back to Japan, Nick and Charlie land in Osaka and immediately lose their prisoner. In his quest to recapture Sato, Nick manages to arouse the ire of both Japanese and American authorities and is finally forced to strike a deal with one of Sato's rivals, Sugai (Tomisaburo Wakayama), to get close enough to Sato to arrest him. BLACK RAIN throws in every "high-concept" element imaginable, from maverick cops to male bonding to harrowing chases. On a thematic level, the film is just plain confused. Director Ridley Scott's visual gifts are still evident in BLACK RAIN. But with retread plot and characters, Scott's stylistic flourishes become irritating clutter. leave a comment
