Marcel Camus transplants the myth of Orpheus onto the soil of Rio de Janeiro during Carnival, and the results explode off the screen. In Camus's telling, Orfeo (Breno Mello) is a streetcar conductor; Eurydice (Marpessa Dawn) is a dancer who, pursued by a mysterious stranger dressed for Carnival as Death, has fled her native village.
