If your idea of heaven is 18-wheelers jackknifing across twisty-turny roads while lesser vehicles scatter in an ear-splitting whirlwind of burning rubber, metal sparks and shattering glass, look no further than this uninspired throwback to mean mother-trucker action flicks of the '70s. Lifelong trucker Jack Crews (Patrick Swayze, who replaced Hercules he-man Kevin Sorbo shortly after shooting began) lost his license after falling asleep at the wheel and mowing down a family who had the misfortune to be pulled over by the wrong stretch of deserted road. Now he's fresh out of jail and trying to patch things up with his wife and daughter (Brenda Strong, Erin Broderick), while working as a mechanic for the shady Mr. Cutler (Graham Beckel). Jack tries to refuse when his new boss offers suspiciously easy money for picking up a load in Georgia and driving it up to Newark. But with the bank about to foreclose on his house, he reluctantly puts on his driving gloves and heads down south to rendezvous with a scripture-spouting cracker named Red (Meatloaf). Red tells Jack he has to drive with a partner, would-be country singer Earl (Randy Travis), and sends along Sonny (Gabriel Cassius) and Wes (Brian Vincent) as escorts. A whole lotta car chases, explosions, gun battles and reckless driving later, and his truck full of illegal weapons is headed for a showdown with Cutler's goons, the FBI, the ATF and the mysterious black dog, an apparition that appears to greedy truckers before a fall and haunts Jack's guilty dreams. This psychological/mystical touch can't rescue the story from the tar pit of cliches in which it's firmly mired. leave a comment --Maitland McDonagh
