Birdman Of Alcatraz

1962, Movie, NR, 147 mins

Excellent direction by the late John Frankenheimer, who had a way with glorious black-and-white, makes this one worth a look. Burt Lancaster plays a surly, withdrawn prison inmate who cures a sick bird which flies into his cell one day and later becomes an internationally recognized ornithologist. Fighting against an overly protective mother (the great Thelma Ritter) and a truculent warden (Karl Malden), he's nonetheless able to continue his research even when sent to Alcatraz.
