The Lego Toy Company wisely configured this kiddie franchise so that its biomechanical heroes could keep battlin' and rattlin' through endless direct-to-video sequels. Before six Toa warriors of the previous installment can relocate to the island of Mata Nui, they discover that their original Metru Nui homeland has fallen into ruin. Pressed for time, the sextet squabbles about priorities, especially the quickest way to spring an incarcerated Matoran hero in a far-off land. That distant domain is ruled by King Sidorak (voice of Paul Dobson) and his venomous fiancée, Roodaka (Kathleen Barr). For this queen-in-waiting, her betrothed liege is merely the means to an end: To set free her true love, Makuta, who's been jammed inside a red crystal as punishment. To liberate him, Roodaka must suck up the life force of the six Toa warriors, and so bides her time until the sextet shows up to rescue the Matoran prisoner. Wonder who that could be? After the six amigos fend off an attack by spidery Visoraks, they experience a Kafkaesque moment: The arachnids have transformed them into hybrid creatures known as Hordika. Although Yoda-like advisor Norik (French Tickner) informs them their Hordika manifestations will aid their mission, Vakama (Alessandro Juliani of the 2000s "Battlestar Galactica" series) tires of being a team player and storms off. As Vakama's solo journey winds down, opportunistic Roodaka dangles before him the promise of a command position — and when Vakama's boon companions come calling, Roodaka prepares to siphon off their energy. Unless Vakama can see beyond his blind ambition, Roodaka will turn the lot of them into her personal power surge. Even if one hasn't followed the previous BIONICLE adventures, the writers expertly rehash past events without stalling their new exposition. The one-for-all, all-for-one premise comes through clearly for youngsters eager to gasp at the heroes' narrow squeaks from extinction. leave a comment --Robert Pardi
