One of the seminal British working-class films of the 1960s, John Schlesinger's third feature is a first-rate comedy-fantasy that stars Tom Courtenay as Billy Fisher, an incorrigable dreamer who works for a funeral director. No one will argue the plot's derivation -- James Thurber's classic short story "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" -- but Billy is also a pathological liar who, as Oscar Wilde once said, doesn't lie for gain, just for the sheer joy of lying.
