The Big Show

1937, Movie, NR, 70 mins

starstarstarstar
Autry plays a dual role as himself and his own stuntman: the western star skips out on an appearance at the Texas Centennial in Dallas (where on-location scenes were filmed) and his double takes over for him, which confuses each's fiancee, as well as gangsters who look for the star and are pummeled by the stuntman. It's top-notch Autry fare with plenty of action and a lot more humor than is found in most of his oaters. Autry sings "Lady Known as Lulu" and "Mad about You." The hillbilly songs are backed up by the western swing of the Light Crust Doughboys and the Sons of the Pioneers. In the latter group was a young, handsome singer named Leonard Slye, later renamed Roy Rogers. Billed as Dick Weston, Rogers also had a fist fight with Autry in another horse opera, THE OLD CORRAL. leave a comment
