BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA

This hilarious, action-packed movie was viciously maligned at the time of its release, and the film subsequently sank like a stone at the box office. Written and directed in a campy, tongue-in-cheek style, it's a loving homage to those wild imports from Hong Kong--kung-fu movies. Russell is a swaggering truck driver who would like to think he's as tough as John Wayne. During a stop in San Francisco, he accompanies his Chinese-American friend (Dun) to the airport, where they are to meet Dun's beautiful, green-eyed fiancee, Pai. At the airport another woman with green eyes, Cattrall, catches the attention of the ever-amorous Russell, and some young Chinese thugs appear and kidnap Pai. It seems that Hong, a 2,000-year-old sorcerer, is looking for a woman with green eyes--as a sacrifice. This film is filled with so many likable characters that even the villains (especially Hong) are sympathetic. Once again, Russell is terrific. Also excellent are Cattrall, Dun, and the delightful Wong as the impish good sorcerer. Taking top honors, however, is Hong as the villainous Lo Pan. BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA is a wholly enjoyable romp that deserved to be a hit. leave a comment
