Although the plot line is contrived and hopelessly cliched, THE BIG TOWN might at least have been an engaging celebration of old movie conventions. Instead, it is a strangely lifeless film that fails to interest despite the efforts of its solid cast. The story begins in the small town of Rockport, Indiana, in the late 1950s. J.C. Cullen (Matt Dillon), an apparently upstanding young man who works in an auto repair shop by day, spends his nights shooting craps. With amazing luck and a quick mind with which he instantly calculates the odds, Cullen proves to be a devastating gambler. His skill takes him to Chicago, where he meets two very different women and finds that the games are much tougher. Director Ben Bolt makes his feature debut with THE BIG TOWN, directing in a perfunctory way with little attention paid to the internal rhythms of each scene. The unnecessarily complicated story lurches from one subplot to the next, acquiring new characters and then dismissing them unceremoniously. Despite all the props, costumes, and music, the film conveys no feel for the city, the period, or the seedy gambling milieu. leave a comment
