The Big Score

1983, Movie, R, 85 mins

The locale is Chicago, the story that of a cop, Frank Hooks (Fred Williamson), who is dispatched from the force when a lot of money disappears and he's accused of stealing it. This, of course, allows him to hunt the bad dudes on his own with none of the red tape that ties up policemen. Williamson, who also directed, had directed some decent adventure pictures prior to this, and the film would probably be better if he had stayed behind the camera. John Saxon and Richard Roundtree, who began a new subgenre with the late Ernest Tidyman's SHAFT series, play cops with their usual aplomb. Lauter, as the CIC (Cop In Charge), is on the money. Are you sick to death of drug bust pictures? If so, avoid this one. But if you like murder, mayhem, and excessive violence, you'll probably love THE BIG SCORE. Joao Fernandes' photography is one of the film's few pluses. leave a comment
