This eagerly anticipated sequel to the incredibly popular PEE-WEE'S BIG ADVENTURE lacks the delirious, magical, cartoonlike zaniness of the first film and presents the audience with a slightly more adult Pee-wee--one who likes, indeed lusts after, pretty girls! The movie opens with a hilarious dream sequence in which Pee-wee, decked out in a silver-spangled suit, croons Sinatra style to an audience of screaming feminine admirers. Pee-wee's fantasy is interrupted, however, by the crowing of a rooster; now we see that he is the proud owner of a farm. With the help of his talking pet pig, Vance, Pee-wee runs the farm while romancing local schoolteacher Miller. When a freak storm blows through town and dumps a traveling circus onto his property, Pee-wee meets beautiful and lusty Italian acrobat Golino and falls in love, trapping himself in a sticky romantic triangle. Missing from most of this sequel is the inventive, manic goofiness that made the first film so much fun. Director Kleiser fails to bring the kind of loopy energy that PEE-WEE'S BIG ADVENTURE director Burton brought to the first film. Despite the weak direction, however, much of the blame must be shared by Pee-wee's alter ego, Reubens. He coproduced and cowrote this mess, which began shooting in January 1988 and was released on July 22, 1988--a mere 6 1/2 months later, which is incredibly hasty for a major release. One must assume Reubens hustled to get the film done so that shooting wouldn't interfere with work on his television show, "Pee-wee's Playhouse." leave a comment
