By the time they made this, Laurel and Hardy had been working together for almost twenty years. In comparison to many other L&H pictures, it is woeful. (But compared to what passes for comedy lately, it's hysterical!) They made three more films after this one and none was particularly good or successful; this was about the last of it and, for that alone, it merits watching. Stan and Ollie are mail-order detectives hired to guard a new bomb at the inventor's house. The house is incredibly modern (what the futuristic set designers thought houses would be like in the 1980s) and understandably befuddles them. Criminals attempt to steal the explosive but are foiled by Stan and Ollie. Highlights include the boys finding themselves in a drone airplane that's being used for target practice. Some political overtones here (it was made during WW II) and a number of laughs, but not as many as we'd come to expect. This was producer Wurzel's last film after a 30-year career at Fox. Look for Bobby Blake (born Michael Gubitosi, later known as Robert Blake) as Egbert Hartley. Also...Laurel and Hardy aficionados will recall Edgar Dearing as the fuming motorcycle policeman in TWO TARS. He does it again here, 16 years later and still fuming. leave a comment
