The welcome mat is laid down and plum worn out by the comings and goings of various guests — welcome or not —in this audacious, gender-bending comedy. FBI undercover agent Malcolm Turner (Martin Lawrence, letting it all hang out and then some) is the agency's resident Lon Chaney, donning one criminal-nabbing disguise after another. On their latest case, Turner and his partner (Paul Giamatti) are sent down South to recapture an escaped bank robber named Lester (Terrence Howard), who's desperately trying to recover his stolen loot. The agents stake out the home of a woman known to everyone as "Big Momma" (Ella Mitchell); she's about to get a visit from granddaughter Sherry (Nia Long), who's Lester's ex-girlfriend and may also have been his accomplice. But the stakeout hits a snag. Big Momma is called away suddenly, and without her, the case is ruined. Unless... Malcolm can impersonate the plus-size granny, nab Lester and get a confession from Sherry. The hitch is that Malcolm doesn't realize what a honey Sherry is — even a well-padded fat suit can't hide Malcolm's romantic urges, and this state of affairs sets up the film's subplot. Will Big Momma/Malcolm get his man — and his woman? And how will Malcolm/Momma be dressed when he/she does? Suffice it to say, everything gets ironed out in high slapstick style. Pratfalls and down-home potty humor aside, Lawrence — with the help of Oscar-winning makeup effects artist Greg Cannom (MRS. DOUBTFIRE) — has created yet another prosthetic screen wonder. And look for a cameo by Lawrence's Martin co-star, Tichina Arnold; she's at her tart-tongued best. leave a comment --Stephen Miller
