This hard-hitting film begins when Meeker kidnaps a young boy and takes him deep into Colorado's Royal George Park, where the boy attempts to escape and is accidentally killed in a fall. Meeker still collects $200,000 in ransom money, but he is captured after hiding the loot and is sent to prison. There he meets tough cons Crawford, Talman, Chaney, Bronson, and others who plan and execute a successful escape, taking Meeker back to the site of the kidnaping to collect his loot. Hadley and other G-men, joined by rangers and local police, trap the gang in a shootout that ends with all the culprits dead or captured. A particularly brutal sequence after the prison break is that in which the psychopathic Crawford kills fellow con Bronson, then, to prevent the corpse from being identified, burns away his face and fingerprints with a blowtorch, a scene undoubtedly inspired by the use of such devices in Mark Hellinger's classic prison film, BRUTE FORCE. Good action and outdoor photography, coupled with frightening performances from Crawford, as a berserk con, and Meeker, as a calculating kidnaper, make for a tension-filled, first-rate production. leave a comment
