Great little comedy western with a surprise ending starring Fonda and Woodward as a farm couple who get involved in a big-stakes poker game while traveling to their new home in Texas. A compulsive gambler, Fonda puts up the family's life savings against experienced card-players like rancher Robards, lawyer McCarthy and the richest undertaker in the territory, Bickford. When he realizes he's about to lose all, the tension spurs a heart attack incapacitating him for the rest of the game. He begs the players to let his wife finish his hand and they reluctantly agree, setting up a neat twist ending. Outstanding cast, well-paced script, and deft execution make this an enjoyable 95 minutes. leave a comment
