A square peg in a round hole, middle-school student Picasso Dewlap (Robert Burke) can't abide small-town life in his new home, Cedar Island. Transplanted there by his aging hippie parents, Picasso bristles at an environment where school basketball reigns supreme. While his father Victor (Richard Thomas) knocks himself out upgrading lawn ornaments for a living, Picasso finally makes a friend. Oddly enough, that pal is an errant bigfoot named Ed (Trevor Jones). Welcomed into the Dewlap household, Ed proves a hit at school, particularly after he dazzles Coach Donovan (Gregory Thirloway) with his expert dribbling. Finding a loophole in official rules, Donovan uses Ed's hook-shot to cement victory for his team of perpetual losers. But the championship is jeopardized when Ed becomes homesick for the forest. Simultaneously inane and inspirational, this ode to team spirit and individuality is as uplifting as a "We Are the World" commercial. A none-too-subtle plea for tolerance, it presents a message you may not want to hear: Bigfoots are people, too. While it's indeed refreshing to see our furry friends away from the glare of tabloid tele-photo lenses, the film's fantasy value is seriously undermined by the fact that viewers can practically see the zipper in Ed's cheapo costume. This film was shown on cable before being released to video. leave a comment --Robert Pardi
