Big Fish: Review

Tim Burton's 2003 yarn is a deft blend of fantastic noodling and astute psychological drama. William Bloom (Billy Crudup) grew up in the shadow of his charismatic father's (Albert Finney) elaborate whoppers — stories of witches, Siamese-twin singers, misunderstood giants, circus escapades and a rustic Shangri-La buried deep in some spooky woods just off a lost highway. But William's quest to tease the truth out from the lies yields surprising results. Burton's fanciful visuals offset novelist Daniel Wallace's homespun moralizing, producing an astringently sentimental tall tale that's as delightful as it is poignant. Stage and screen star Barbara Bel Geddes, best known for playing Dallas matriarch Miss Ellie, died at her home in Northeast Harbor, Maine, on Monday. The cause of death was lung cancer.
