The Big Broadcast Of 1937: Review

Burns and Allen are joined by Jack Benny and Bob Burns for comedy and a host of specialty acts, as usual in the "Big Broadcast" films. At 100 minutes it's a trifle long, but the comedy is quick and the music near-constant. Benny runs a radio station and is in constant trouble with his sponsors. George and Gracie are the Platts, a couple who do the "Platt Golf Ball" program. Benny and Gracie are always running afoul of each other. Much of the action takes place in and around the radio station with a few well-chosen forays into various New York nightclubs of the era: Leon and Eddie's, Lindy's, the Paradise, the Onyx, and El Morocco are featured. Among the musical performers, Benny Goodman gets the best visual representation and Leopold Stokowski is given the best editing. (The producers must have felt strongly about the prestige yielded by classical musicians; they added Kirsten Flagstad to the next "Big Broadcast" film, with less integrated results.) This is not quite a comedy and not quite a musical, but whatever it is, if you love Jack Benny, you'll love this film. leave a comment
