A very strange film that is quite outdated. Jolson does most of the movie in blackface as a stable boy who is given the chance to ride "Big Boy" in the Kentucky Derby. Gamblers, bad guys, all the usual cliches abound. Jolson sings a number of songs including an inexplicable flashback to post-Civil War days for a leaden comedy sequence with Jolson leading a choir in a host of black spirituals. At the film's conclusion, Jolson comes out in white face, tells the audience that a Jolson movie should end with a song, and he does "Tomorrow's Another Day." Why is this done? A few oldtimers we asked said that Jolson's blackface character must have been so convincing that Warner Bros. wanted to make sure the audience knew it was Jolie under that dark makeup. Jolson, Babe Ruth, and Bill Robinson (Bojangles) are all reputed to have attended the St. Mary's Industrial Home For Boys in Baltimore. How's that for an alumni association? leave a comment
