Somewhat disappointing adaptation of John Masters' novel about a young half-breed woman (Gardner) who comes back to India to find her country bubbling over with anger on the eve of the English leaving for good. Granger, jut-jawed and handsome as ever, is in charge of some troops at Bhowani Junction. His job is to keep leftists from sabotaging the trains. Gardner is apparently in love with Travers, also a half-caste. She kills an Englishman who's trying to assault her and is taken in by the commie chief, Illing. After a series of adventures (crowd riots, a train wreck, etc.), Gardner, who has been having some trouble trying to decide if she's an Indian or a European, concludes that it doesn't make a bit of difference, and it all ends happily ever after. A simple-minded film about a very important period in world history. After seeing this film, we know little more about India than we did before seeing it. Director Cukor is out of his element with this movie. leave a comment
