Originally released in Britain in 1972 as HORROR ON SNAPE ISLAND, this film was rereleased in the US in 1981 as BEYOND THE FOG, an attempt to capitalize on the success of John Carpenter's THE FOG (1980). After a young American woman appears to have gone mad and killed her companions on Snape Island, which is rumored to contain a fortune in buried treasure, a private investigator (Bryant Halliday) and a team of archaeologists (there is a Phoenician temple on the island) visit the scene to investigate. Once on the island, of course, they are viciously slaughtered one by one. The main suspect is a horribly scarred lighthouse keeper who is quite insane and keeps the rotting corpse of his wife in a rocking chair. Gratuitous nudity and gory violence are exploited to the fullest by director Jim O'Connolly, who penned the script based on a story by respected horror writer George Baxt (BURN WITCH BURN). Unfortunately, the performances are subpar, even for this genre. O'Connolly has a penchant for shock-cuts and zooms that tends to be overbearing, dating the film badly.
