One of the most intriguing murder cases from Down Under concerned the killing of rural New Zealanders Harvey and Jeannette Crewe. Eventually, a young farmer named Arthur Thomas was tried and convicted for their murder, only to be pardoned in 1979 after David Yallop's hard-hitting book re-opened the case. David Hemmings plays malevolent cop Bruce Hutton, who resorts to planting evidence (a la Orson Welles' Hank Quinlan in TOUCH OF EVIL) in order to convict Thomas (Hargreaves). An attempt was made to cast actors who looked like the real figures in the story, but this effort will mean little to viewers outside New Zealand or Australia. The film's semi-documentary style, its basis in fact, and superb performances by Hemmings and Hargreaves make BEYOND REASONABLE DOUBT an engrossing though uninventive film. Not to be confused with the 1956 Fritz Lang film BEYOND A REASONABLE DOUBT. leave a comment
