A second-rate plot distinguished by a first-rate cast. Andrews, a writer who witnesses an execution, has a discussion with editor Blackmer, who suggests the two carry out a ruse to show the fallibility of circumstantial evidence. Blackmer encourages Andrews to confess to murder and go to trial, with Blackmer holding back evidence which will prove Andrews is innocent. Andrews goes along with the plan and confesses to the unsolved murder of a girl. He is arrested and put on trial, but Blackmer is killed in a car accident before he can produce the evidence which will free Andrews. Andrews' conviction seems certain, until Blackmer's lawyer uncovers a letter from the dead man which details the ruse and clears Andrews. Later, however, in a conversation with Fontaine, Blackmer's daughter, the truth comes out--Andrews did actually murder the girl. BEYOND A REASONABLE DOUBT is a ludicrous story, very hard to swallow. Lang, who should have known better, must have directed this with his good eye closed. leave a comment
