Beware! The Blob

1972, Movie, NR, 88 mins

This sequel to the 1958 classic plays the material for laughs rather than for genuine chills. A worker (Godfrey Cambridge) back from a stint on the Alaska pipeline brings home a frozen segment of the red, jelly-like blob in a thermos; his wife (Marlene Clark) leaves it on the counter, allowing it to thaw. The blob proceeds to consume everything in sight, growing ever larger. Local teenagers Bobby (Robert Walker Jr.) and Lisa (Gwynn Gilford) realize something strange is going on and eventually exterminate the shapeless mass that's threatening to consume their home town. Larry Hagman, then-star of the hugely popular nighttime soap opera Dallas, handled the directorial chores on this mindless, overlong follow up; Al Hamm's sharp cinematography is its saving grace. Hagman shows no flair for direction, though he does assemble an extraordinary cast of well-known actors in cameo parts. leave a comment
