First the good news: Sniggering David Spade does not appear in the new Chris Farley comedy. Of course, the bad news is that there's a new Chris Farley comedy. Farley -- one of the few comedians who could ever be justly accused of debasing the pratfall -- has made a film that's tantamount to watching an overweight man slip on a banana peel for nearly 90 minutes. Here the Saturday Night Live veteran plays Haru, a hefty ninja wannabe who as an infant washes up on the Japanese shore. Rescued by a clan of clandestine ninjas who believe he's the long-prophesied Great White Ninja, Haru is trained in the lethal arts. The movie's one, very long joke is that Haru is nothing of the sort: He's just a clumsy fat guy who falls down a lot. As the big-bellied and big-hearted Haru, Farley is surely meant to be endearing. But he's simply grotesque, a quality this film and its endlessly repeated gags exploit ruthlessly. And if you've ever wondered how many times someone needs to shout "Holy Shinto" before it isn't even remotely funny, the answer is twice. leave a comment --Ken Fox
