Beverly Hills Cop II

1987, Movie, R, 102 mins

The frenetic, loud, profane black cop who invaded the posh confines of Beverly Hills the first time around is back, though he is far less engaging this time around. As the film opens, Beverly Hills is undergoing a series of robberies committed by leather-jacketed punks led by Karla Fry (Brigitte Nielsen) and Chip Cain (Dean Stockwell). Axel Foley (Eddie Murphy), the tough, street-smart cop from Detroit, is called upon to return to set things right, aiding dumb, helpless Beverly Hills detectives Billy Rosewood (Judge Reinhold) and John Taggart (John Ashton). This sequel, which is really a plagiarism of the original, topped the box office charts for 1987. Yet the film, with a budget of $30 million, simply isn't funny. Murphy controlled the destiny of this film and should bear the brunt of criticism for its slam-bang predictability. A Best Song nomination went to "Shakedown." leave a comment
