Constance Bennett plays an American hardware heiress married to a stuffy English lord. After getting angry with her husband, she proceeds to scandalize London society with her wild ways, indulging in such outrageous behavior as wearing black to social events that call for white and throwing a wild tea party that ignores all decorum. The style is veddy, veddy British with its polite manner and sophistication. Director George Cukor, in one of his earliest films, handles the comedy well, with a smart pacing that never drags. Bennett is good fun, managing her comic turns with ease. The only low point is Tyrell Davis as an effeminate dancing teacher, portrayed as the classic homosexual stereotype with rouged lips and mincing behavior. After this film was made, producer David O. Selznick eventually defected to MGM at the invitation of his father-in-law, Louis B. Mayer. He brought Cukor with him from RKO to direct Selznick's first film for the new studio. leave a comment
