Director John Woo's first foray into the Hong Kong gangster genre, and an enormous hit; it spawned several sequels and essentially launched the Hong Kong action craze. Ti Lung stars as a gangster who's determined to go straight after serving a stretch behind bars, but gets caught between an aggressive crime boss (Waise Lee) and his own brother (Leslie Cheung), a gang-busting police officer. Given that for the bulk of human history, the most important thing you could know about a person — in both the East and the West — was who his or her family was, I’m surprised that this order isn’t the norm everywhere. But in the West, the standard name format is surname last (generally a patronymic — the father’s name) and given name first.
