Smooth sailing all the way. Standard Hollywood bio of songwriters De Sylva, Brown and Henderson featuring a slew of tunes. Composers are played by MacCrae, Dailey and Borgnine, a nice contrast between actors. Among the many standards performed in the movie are "Black Bottom," "Button Up Your Overcoat," "Keep Your Sunnyside Up," and the title song. Newman's score earned the film an Oscar nomination, but the highlight is Sheree North. North was brought from Broadway to Fox as a threat to Monroe. Her personality and looks suggested a beatnik Monroe/Clara Bow, and she was a terrific dancer. Fox wasted her in films Monroe was smart enough to pass on, never bothering to help her (or later Mansfield) develop an image tailored to her alone. Today she is a character actress who works very often and is still an attractive woman. Watch her steal this film dancing with Jacques D'Amboise to "Birth of the Blues." leave a comment
