Best Defense

1984, Movie, R, 94 mins

This wholly unfunny comedy intercuts between two characters, in two different parts of the world, at two different times. 1982: Moore, an Army officer and beleaguered engineer, struggles to perfect a gyro that will be the core component in the missile system for a new tank. 1984: Murphy, a soldier on duty in an Arabian desert, vainly attempts to keep his new tank under control, but the gyro is malfunctioning. The scenes, played one after the other as the picture switches from 1982 to 1984, leaves the audience bewildered. Are these flashbacks or premonitions? When Moore accidentally comes upon the plans for a gyro that will work, he is in danger of being killed by a nutso industrial spy Rasche, who has also been seeking the plans. The film continues to cut back and forth, Moore struggling to perfect the gyro while, in the other time frame, Murphy finds himself in a situation that calls for a reliable weapon. Try as they may, neither the cast nor the filmmakers can cover up the fact that this movie, like Moore's prototype, is a dud. leave a comment
