An excellent cast--including Eric Roberts, James Earl Jones, and Chris Penn--can be found slumming in this thoroughly predictable, blandly directed action film. BEST OF THE BEST follows the members of a US karate team as they prepare for a match against the formidable Koreans. Alex (Roberts) is the quiet, sensitive one, who had given up fighting because of a bad shoulder. Joining the US team is a dream come true for him. His teammates are Tommy Lee (Phillip Rhee), an Asian karate instructor whose brother was killed by the same opponent he will face in the contest; Travis (Penn), a pugnacious southerner; Virgil (John Dye), a meditating Buddhist; and Sonny (David Agresta), a proud Italian ladies' man. The team is coached by Couzo (Jones), a ruthlessly strict trainer. The film is pure post-ROCKY formula. Once the team is chosen, they must overcome their personal problems, pull together as a team, and finally fight for victory. Despite a shamelessly predictable story and familiar characters, BEST OF THE BEST is still watchable, thanks mainly to the performers. Although director Bob Radler gums up the fight scenes with lots of unnecessary slo-mo, and the film follows its formula mechanically, this is a moderately serviceable action yarn. leave a comment
