BERSERKER is routine murderous mayhem with a gimmick: this time it's actually the reincarnated spirit of a cannibalistic Viking warrior that's doing the mincing. Six interchangeable teenagers set out from the city for a week of camping in a remote valley originally settled by Norwegians--or "descendants of the Vikings," as the smart kid portentously reads aloud from a book. He goes on to relate the legend of the "berserkers," fierce warriors who were so feared even by their own comrades that they were kept chained in the bows of longboats until they hit the beaches and were then unloosed upon the populace. The brainy teen continues to read some mumbo-jumbo about the spirits of these warriors being doomed because they practiced cannibalism, never to find rest but to pass from generation to generation until the last of their descendants is killed. The other kids laugh it off, of course--until they arrive at the campground and begin dying one by one. There's nothing here to attract even the most indiscriminate of horror fans, and the performances are all far below even the mediocre standard of the slice-and-dice genre. The kids are idiotic, becoming hopelessly lost in the woods only steps away from their cabin and running around in circles over the same terrain without realizing they've been there just moments before. BERSERKER has almost no plot and lis ackadaisically directed. Little wonder that this one never graced a commercial screen but instead appeared straight on the video racks to lure the unwary into wasting $2 as well as valuable time that could be spent organizing sock drawers or playing Nintendo. leave a comment
