Once again, the tale of a single woman in love with a very married man. But this one has a difference. It's told on two levels, in reality and in fantasy, and it flashes forward and back in various time frames. The story concerns a screenwriter tracking down the author of a scandalous book so he can write a script from it. The author insists that her book was purely imagination and bears no resemblance to her own life. But then she eventually admits that Benvenuta was a real person and tells the story. Gassman, as the man in the book, and Ardant, as the woman, are excellent in making us believe their passion, but the task of keeping both tales going eventually proves overwhelming. Two parallel stories is not new, but anyone attempting it had better look at Lelouch's AND NOW MY LOVE (1975) before attempting it. With BENVENUTA Flemish fillmmaker Andre Delvaux may have bit off more than he could chew. leave a comment
