Kennedy is about to be lynched as a horse thief when Stewart, once a border raider from Missouri, saves his life. Stewart is now working as a guide for a group of farmers on their way to Oregon. A grateful Kennedy joins him and they lead the wagon train. They are attacked and repel a band of Shoshone Indians, then arrive in Portland. Flippen, the farmers' leader, gets Petrie to take care of transportation for the group. The farmers go upriver and settle in for the long winter. When Petrie's promised supplies fail to get to the newly built village, Stewart and Flippen race into Portland to see what went wrong. In the short while since they've been gone, Portland has turned into a boom town due to a gold rush. Petrie can make a lot more money selling his supplies to newly rich miners so he refuses to make good on the deal with the farmers. Guns roar and Stewart and Flippen get the goods and race upriver on a boat. They arrive and Kennedy is a different man now. He is entrapped by the lure of easy money and wants to sell the supplies and cattle to miners, who are willing to pay inflated prices. Kennedy takes Flippen and his daughter, Adams, hostage. In a final battle, Stewart drowns Kennedy in the exciting penultimate scene. Flippen and Adams realize that Stewart is now a changed man, so they welcome him as part of their community. The film features good performances, a slightly simple plot, and fine action direction from Mann. BEND OF THE RIVER offers appearances by Rock Hudson in one of his earliest roles and Frances Bavier before she joined Andy Griffith for their memorable TV series. leave a comment
