The sequel to the popular killer-rat movie WILLARD (1971) picks up right where its predecessor left off, as an army of rats devours its hapless trainer, Willard. With the cops in hot pursuit, the rats hide out in the city sewers and lie low for awhile. The rodents' leader, Ben, surfaces periodically to hunt for food, and while out on one of his forays he meets young Montgomery, a lonely boy with a heart condition. Ben and Montgomery become fast friends, and a genuinely touching relationship develops between the rat and the boy while Ben's minions stage commando raids on the surrounding community. As is to be expected, adults just don't understand Montgomery and Ben's special relationship, and the authorities attempt to force Danny to reveal where the rats--4,000 of them--are hiding. Now remembered mainly for its Michael Jackson theme song--which was nominated for an Academy Award and became a huge hit--BEN is actually a fairly effective and surprisingly sentimental nature-on-the-loose movie that manages to deliver the goods expected of the genre while getting the audience all misty-eyed over the boy-rat relationship. Veteran crime-film director Karlson (THE PHENIX CITY STORY, 1955; THE BROTHERS RICO, 1957; WALKING TALL, 1973) handles this potentially laughable material with aplomb and presents some genuinely creepy scenes, especially the one in which Ben introduces Danny to his army of rats in the sewer. Although neither WILLARD nor BEN has held up particularly well over the years, both are a lot of fun to watch and work better than they have any right to. leave a comment
