The plot follows the life of a man from when he is 10 years old in Vienna in 1840 through his 90s in New York City in 1933. Boles fights in the Austrian revolution of 1848, battles for the Union in the Civil War, and winds up giving violin lessons in New York. His son is a family disgrace
until he dies heroically in the Spanish-American War. His grandson, Farley, becomes a brilliant violinist and is responsible for arranging to have Boles' symphony, the work of a lifetime, performed before his death. Too much material crammed into too short a time frame. Look for a tiny Mickey
Rooney in a tiny early role.
