BELLES ON THEIR TOES is the sequel to CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN and has everything the first picture had, with one notable exception: Clifton Webb. This may be one of the first women's liberation-themed films, since it details the story of Loy carrying on with the business after Webb's death. With the 12 kids to help and hinder her, Loy continues in the industrial engineering field and encounters serious prejudice against women. Arnold, as a wealthy industrialist, lets Loy work for him, training young engineers. She does a bang-up job and makes enough money for the children's educations. It's not easy to have 12 stories going simultaneously, so the authors opt for one major subplot: Hunter as a medical man falls for eldest daughter Crain and they eventually marry. Loy is particularly good as an emerging woman who gets righteously indignant when called for and yet never loses the femininity that makes her so attractive. Whereas so many movie widows float helplessly until the next man swims through the sea to rescue them, Loy's character meets adversity face-to-face and triumphs, proving that a woman is the equal of a man in any field--except mothering; in that she has a large edge. leave a comment
