Disney rings the Belle again in this just-what-you'd-expect sequel to their classic animated version of BEAUTY AND THE BEAST (1991). Belle (voice of Paige O’Hara) and her Beast (Robbie Benson) squabble over living conditions at his palace, and each feels the other should apologize first. Hoping to preserve the peace, their animated friends, the Dictionary and the Quill, scribble a polite note of contrition in the Beast's name. But the Beast is furious when he discovers the forgery and banishes the offenders. Eventually, he sets aside his pride, forgives the meddlers and opens his heart to Belle. Next, Fifi the Duster (Kimmy Robertson) plans a major fete to celebrate the anniversary of her relationship with Lumiere the candle (Jerry Orbach). She nearly causes a fire in the library with her preparations and harbors an unreasonable jealousy toward Belle, who’s only trying to make Fifi’s dream date come true. Belle must convince Fifi she has no designs on Lumiere. Once this impasse is resolved, another party goes awry when the castle residents decide to cheer up a depressed Mrs. Potts (Anne Rogers). The partygoers try to outdo each other with their clever preparations, but until her friends learn to cooperate Mrs. Potts can't shake her winter blues. Finally, despite the Beast’s decree against sheltering birds, Belle nurses a wounded bird back to health in her room. After hearing the feathered creature sing, the Beast changes his tune, but Belle must make him see that keeping a songbird captive is cruel. The Beast must learn to let go of something he loves. Small children won’t mind the obvious moral lessons their old friends deliver, but aside from the reunion value this animated feature cashes in on the cachet of Disney’s bona fide classic without ever finding its own identity. leave a comment --Rpbert Pardi
