Behind The Mask

A strange title that makes one think of Zorro, not a hospital drama. The producers must have thought we'd understand that the mask they refer to is a surgical one, not a mask to hide one's identity. Lots of plots, subplots and counterplots in this Dope Opera which is not to be confused with the Boris Karloff 1932 feature of the same name. Redgrave and MacGinnis are the two senior surgeons who run the country hospital. They are diametrically opposed as to how it should function. This gives birth to several complications and the medical highlight of the film: a heart operation shown on a closed-circuit TV screen. This film introduced Vanessa Redgrave to the movie industry and she showed immediate promise. This has good casting in the smaller roles and Miles Malleson is excellent as the chairman of the hospital's board. (Malleson was a playwright, screenwriter, and actor whose personal life was filled with sexual intrigue, quite unlike the potty roles he played such as the celibate Dr. Chasuble in THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST.) leave a comment
