Frank and Caroline Mouris, the husband-and-wife team best known for their wonderful experimental short, FRANK FILM, turned to feature filmmaking with this independent production. It's primarily a strange conglomeration of ideas that alternates between fresh and original stylizing and predictable, boring slapstick. When it's neither of these, it's often downright weird. Steiner, an alluring redhead, lived with Humet, a poet who writes limericks for greeting cards. Their downstairs neighbor, Rush, is a shy law student inexperienced in worldly ways. Steiner and Humet befriend him and agree to help him expand his horizons, leading to some bizarre situations. The Mourises certainly display a talent for filmmaking, yet despite these strengths and the affable performances of the three leads, BEGINNER'S LUCK never gels. It plays like a sort of spin on JULES AND JIM, but the spin often goes out of control, leaving the viewer perplexed about the intentions of the film. leave a comment
