BEFORE AND AFTER
starstarstarstar
These are a few of our unfavorite things: Meryl Streep's eyes through a glaze of tears. Meryl Streep's nose raw with crying. Meryl Streep's pale cheeks flushed with passion and/or misery. (Of course, we love everything else about Meryl Streep. Really.) Here she's a middle-aged pediatrician married to manly artist Liam Neeson, who sculpts big things from raw wood and scrap metal. When their sullen adolescent son (pedophile pin-up Edward Furlong) is accused of murdering his girlfriend, the illusion of their happy marriage is brutally shattered. Barbet Schroeder's adaptation of Rosellen Brown's novel sets out to be a provocative dissection of the tensions -- produced by class, sex, age, money and conflicting loyalties -- that nearly strangle a small-town family. But the picture loses its edge early and degenerates into a soggy tug of war between woman's passive tears and man's dynamic rage. Get out your handkerchiefs. leave a comment
