BEETLEJUICE
starstarstarstar
A surreal, demented delight. The second film from director Tim Burton is a wildly inventive, unique horror-comedy that plays like a twisted, surrealistic, cartoon remake of Topper. Michael Keaton is in rare form as an obnoxious ghost-for-hire, rivaled only by Sylvia Sidney as an overloaded other-side caseworker. The film won a much-deserved Oscar for Best Achievement in Makeup. A Push for Pushing Daisies

Could the third time be the charm? Being an eternal optimist when it comes to TV shows I love, I certainly hope so. For the third season in a row, the show I’ve picked as my favorite pilot of the fall season is on ABC, and once again, after two consecutive seasons of my pick failing to make the grade, this show’s projected success is far from a slam dunk. But let me tell you why I believe, despite all logical skepticism to the contrary, that the dazzling “forensic fairy tale” called Pushing Daisies has a shot at making it.First, here’s why my earlier picks didn’t pan out. For one thing, both shows — Invasion in 2005, The Nine in 2006 — had the mixed fortune of being scheduled directly after Lost. (As we’ve learned, the Lost viewing experience is so intense and its fan base so obsessed that it’s pure folly to put any show, especially a demanding one, after Lost.) Both shows were also exceedingly dark in tone, whereas Pushing Daisies... read more

Chief's Daughter Isn't Such a Brat

You may wonder, as I do, just what Rebecca Calloway's problem is on ABC's Commander in Chief (returning tonight at 9 pm/ET). I mean, wouldn't it be the bee's knees to be the president's daughter? Even though she left us hanging for a full day, TVGuide.com was more than happy to talk — prehiatus, mind you — with the first daughter, aka Caitlin Wachs (pronounced "wax"), about life in the White House, a pregnancy shocker to come and that older costar she's been calling "sexy." TVGuide.com: So, you blew off the hotshot TV Guide reporter....Caitlin Wachs: Oh, no! [Laughs] Maybe I'll win you back. TVGuide.com: Out late partying, I read more

Chief's Daughter Isn't Such a Brat

If you're like me, you may wonder just what is Rebecca Calloway's problem on ABC's Commander in Chief (Tuesdays at 9 pm/ET). I mean, wouldn't it be the bee's knees to be the president's daughter? (Or did my usage of "the bee's knees" prove how out of touch I am with today's teens?) Even though she left us hanging for a full day, TVGuide.com was more than happy to talk with the first daughter, aka Caitlin Wachs (pronounced "wax"), about life in the White House, a pregnancy shocker to come, and that older costar she's going around calling "sexy."

TVGuide.com: So, you blew off the hot-shot TV Guide reporter....
Caitlin Wachs:
Oh, no! [Laughs] Maybe I'll win you back.

THE JUICE IS LOOSE

Most fittingly, Howard Stern "Whack Pack" regular Beetlejuice crashed the Tuesday press conference announcing Infinity Broadcasting's plans to replace the shock jock when he moves to Sirius Satellite Radio in 2006. Among Stern's successors, former Van Halen frontman David Lee Roth will inherit seven Infinity's stations, including flagship WXRK in New York; The Man Show's Adam Carolla gets five markets, including Los Angeles' KLSX; and virtual unknown Rover gets Chicago and three other stations. With Infinity's announcement, Scores stock dropped 2 1/8 cup sizes. read more
